Candidates for vacant commission seat profiled

In a Jan. 11 special election, the race for the new Northern District transportation commissioner of North Mississippi will be between seven candidates candidates.
Two of them — Mike Tagert, president of the Tenn-Tom Waterway Development Council, and Dennis Grisham, Tippah County supervisor — are being profiled in today’s edition. Other profiles will follow over the next several days.

Mike Tagert

Bringing with him experience directly related to public transportation, Tagert serves as member of the Trade and Transportation Advisory Council for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.
Tagert, a Starkville resident, graduated from Mississippi State University with two master degrees in science and public policy and administration.
He received his bachelor of science degree from Millsaps College after having served in the United States Marine Corps.
The leading economic development manager for the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway has also served as officer for the Department of Agriculture and Commerce, executive director of the State Bureau of Plant Industry, vice president of the Coalition of Alabama Waterway Associations and vice president of Inland Rivers, Ports and Terminals Inc.
He also participates in the local Red Cross and the Starkville Area Arts Council.
Tagert and his wife, Mary Love, have two children.

Dennis Grisham

Grisham, past president of the Mississippi Association of Supervisors, is serving his seventh term as Tippah County Supervisor.
A pilot and cattleman, he owned and operated Grisham Asphalt and Paving Company Inc. for over 30 years.
Grisham, who also served in the U.S. Marine Corps, attended Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville and the University of Mississippi. He is a member of Dumas Baptist Church, where he teaches the adult men’s Sunday School class.
He is also a member of the Yocona Area Council, Boy Scouts of America and the American Legion.
Grisham and his wife, Lynda, have three children and nine grandchildren.
