MATHISTON — City Park is decorated for the holidays and the town of Mathiston is getting ready to welcome in the Christmas season, with their annual parade.
The Annual Christmas parade is set for 6:30 p.m. today in downtown Mathiston. In the event of rain, the parade will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
This year’s theme will be “Jesus is the Reason for the Season” and the city of Mathiston will be honoring all veterans as the grand marshal’s of this year’s parade.
Betty Jeffcoats, parade organizer, said veterans from all wars, including World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War and the Global War on Terror.
A variety of floats, walking units and antique cars will be part of this year’s event. Jeffcoats said several parade entries are expected to carefully throw candy, including the Southern Cruisers.
The parade route will begin at the Bank of Kilmichael, go through Ellis subdivision and end at Mathiston City Park, where the judging will take place. Trophies for the best float, best walking group and the most Christmas spirit will be given. For the first year, the judging will extend to the community.
Jeffcoats said awards will also be given for the best decorated building/business and the best decorated home. Those awards will be judged before the parade and awards given along with the parade awards.
Santa will be the final entry in tonight’s parade, but this year, his ride will be a little different. Jeffcoats said Santa usually rides into town on a fire truck, but this year, he will be driving something a little closer to his original mode of transportation.
