A 6-year-old Choctaw County boy continues to be treated in a Jackson hospital after being hit by a van on Tuesday.
The boy was reportedly waiting for the school bus with his two older siblings — ages 11 and 14 — when he was hit by a van traveling north on Highway 15 about 4 miles north of Ackerman Tuesday morning, Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Brian Mobley said late Tuesday afternoon.
The exact circumstances of the accident remain under investigation, though it is possible the boy may have been attempting to cross the roadway to catch the southbound school bus, Mobley said.
Witnesses are still being questioned in the incident, he said.
“It’s still unclear exactly what happened,” Mobley said.
The boy was initially transported to OCH Regional Medical Center in Starkville, but was soon transported by ambulance to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for treatment of his injuries at the pediatric hospital there, Mobley said.
While serious, the child’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, said Mobley.
Information about the boy’s medical condition could not be confirmed at press time Tuesday evening.
Mobley said he could not confirm nor deny that the van that struck the boy belonged to the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
The names of the boy, his siblings and the driver of the van are not being released because of the ongoing investigation into the circumstances of Wednesday’s accident, Mobley said.
