MDEQ awards grant to Golden Triangle Solid Waste Authority

JACKSON — The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has awarded the Golden Triangle Solid Waste Management Authority a solid waste assistance grant of $34,200 that will be used for a household hazardous waste collection event.
“The Solid Waste Assistance Grants support a variety of useful solid waste management activities for cities and counties. We are pleased this grant is available to assist the efforts in the Golden Triangle area in improving their management of solid waste,” said Trudy Fisher, MDEQ Executive Director.
Cities and counties may apply for Solid Waste Assistance Grants through the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. These grants are utilized by local communities for programs to prevent and clean up unauthorized dumps; to aid in hiring local solid waste enforcement officers; for public education efforts on solid waste disposal and recycling; and to establish programs for the collection of white goods, bulky wastes and recyclables.

McBride to seek vacant Transportation Commission post

Mississippi House of Representatives Transportation Committee Chairman Warner McBride, D-Courtland, seeks to fill the position of Transportation Commissioner for the Northern District, he announced Monday.
The late Bill Minor, who was elected to the post in 2003, died earlier this month.
“Our friend Bill Minor’s shoes seem impossible to fill, but we know the transportation needs of north Mississippi must continue to be met. Like Bill, I will keep our Transportation Department moving forward, honoring Bill’s legacy by making our roads and bridges better and safer for our families to travel on,” McBride said in a statement announcing his candidacy.
“I will be a responsible steward, making sure that we get the greatest value and quality for the people’s money. Working together, we will create good jobs and strengthen local economies as we continue to make wise investments in improving and building our transportation system to meet the growing demands of the 21st century.”
McBride is a third-generation Panolian. His grandfather was a county supervisor and state representative. In 1992, he followed his grandfather into the House of Representativea, serving Lafayette, Panola and Tallahatchie counties.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in agricultural engineering and business at Mississippi State University.
McBride and his wife, Phyllis, have three sons. He is also active with the Batesville Rotary Club, Panola Partnership and Wildlife Mississippi. Warner serves as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Good Hope Baptist Church.
