A football series was started last year between the Starkville Yellowjackets and the Oxford Chargers in hopes that a rivalry would develop similar to what the colleges of those towns have.
Mississippi State and Ole Miss battle for the Golden Egg Trophy each year and now Starkville and Oxford play in a game that was called Little Egg Bowl last season.
If the 2013 game was any indication of what direction the rivalry is headed, then the future could get pretty intense between the teams.
The Jackets travel to face the Chargers tonight with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
Starkville lost a 35-24 home decision to Oxford last season in a game it has under control at halftime.
"We let it get away last year and it's a little intense rivalry already," SHS head coach Jamie Mitchell said. "We were up 17-7 at half last year and could've had a couple of more, then we just didn't play well enough in the second half and let them get rolling a little bit."
There's an extra incentive for the Jackets and Chargers to play well in this matchup. It will be a clash of top five teams in Mississippi and the winner will keep its high ranking.
In The Associated Press poll released earlier this week, Oxford is ranked at No. 2 and Starkville at No. 3 in the list overall, while the Chargers were No. 1 in Class 5A and the Jackets stand No. 2 in Class 6A. Oxford holds the top spot in other polls.
"You won't find many higher ranked games than this," Mitchell said. "It's a great opportunity to play the No. 1 ranked team in the state."
