City utilities going digital

August 20, 2014

Starkville aldermen gave city utilities the go-ahead Tuesday evening to implement an automatic metering program that aims to both make the utilities more efficient and improve the customer experience.
The board, in its recess meeting at City Hall, unanimously authorized the Starkville Electric and Public Works departments to contract with Elster Solutions — which has a U.S. headquarters in Raleigh, N.C. — for more than $3 million in infrastructure and services over four years to fully digitize their metering operations. Heads for both departments said their respective cash reserves would cover the cost without raising customer rates.
