Mary Kate Hughes began June by breaking into Broadway, but she’s finishing July with a return to her roots in Starkville.

In late May, Stagelighter, an online organization that connects aspiring theatrical performers with theatrical professionals who can give them feedback, organized a Facebook voting contest called Break Into Broadway, where 11 finalists competed via performance video for the right to meet six top Broadway casting directors. Hughes won the vote June 2, but before she did, she said she had already planned to be part of Starkville Community Theatre’s summer musical revue, as she was last year.
