If there is one word to describe the 7-year-old Starkville Nationals All-Star team it would be fighters. No matter what was thrown at them the team never gave up.
In the first week of practice their first baseman went out injured, but they never complained. Then on Sunday when the team suffered a 16-7 defeat at the hands of Louisville you did not see any disappointment. Instead the team happily accepted their third place Dizzy Dean South State trophies and walked off the field proud of what they had accomplished this season.
“In general the kids played great,” coach Allan Smith said. “I couldn’t be more proud of them. This is a great group of kids. They did more than we ever asked and then some. It was a great year and you couldn’t ask for anything more.”
