Choctaw County basketball improves in summer

July 2, 2014

ACKERMAN – One phrase quickly comes to mind when you ask Choctaw County coach Gary Beals about his basketball teams over the summer.
“They were hungry,” Beals said. “They showed up in the gym to practice and they wanted to play. They were simply hungry and that is a sign I like.”
Both set of Chargers hoop teams transferred that desire to playing time on the court this summer.
“We have been playing in a league in Kosciusko,” Beals said. “We did really well. We competed against East Webster, J.Z. George and some other area teams. I feel really good with where we are.”
Getting games under their feet is very important for the Choctaw County girls whose roster was highlighted by youth last season. In fact as the season wound down, Beals found himself with a heavy dose of 8th and 9th graders handling things on the court, but despite the odds against them the coach said his team “competed right until the very end.”
