SMITH ON SPORTS: Longhorns, Swing Elite competitive

June 21, 2014

The United States Speciality Sports Association 11 State Tournament certainly had its share of interesting moments as far as Starkville teams are concerned.
It has been a higly-competitive event anyway, no matter where someone looks at the bracket, but the Starkville representatives began with three-straight one-run victories.
The Swing Elite recorded a 5-4 win over Southern Rock and the Longhorns followed that up with a 4-3 triumph against the Muckdawgs. The Longhorns won the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a squeeze bunt play by Ethan Roberts to score Shemar Crawford.
The drama continued on Friday as the Longhorns earned another one-run decision and this time defeated the Mississippi Indians 8-7 in pool play. It was a different Roberts that got the winning hit as Jesse drove home Cedric Hines with a single in the fourth inning.
Not to be outdone in the comeback department was Swing Elite as they delivered five runs in the fourth inning to take an 11-6 win over the Jackson Bucks.
Neither the Swing nor the Longhorns were able to make it to Championship Sunday today in Class AAA.
The Longhorns have a good team, but their run came to an end late Friday night with a 5-1 loss to the tough Oxford Rebels.
Despite the exit at the USSSA State, coach Keith Lawrence has done a good job working with the youth in Starkville on the baseball field for many years.
