LAFAYETTE, La. – Mississippi State had its previous four Monday elimination games in a regional turn out fine.
That was not the case this year.
MSU lost 5-3 to Louisiana-Lafayette in the if necessary championship game on Monday to lose the Lafayette (La.) Regional.
The Bulldogs won Monday championship games in regionals in 1985, 90, 97 and 2013.
They beat Michigan 19-8 in 1985, Florida State 4-3 in 1990, Washington 4-3 in 1997 and Central Arkansas 6-1 last year.
"We've got to play clean baseball to win championships," MSU head coach John Cohen said. "That's the way we're built and it really wasn't that clean. We just came up short in the end."
