MSU's Cohen successful in opening games of NCAA Regionals
LAFAYETTE, La. – Mississippi State head coach John Cohen has been very successful in opening games of NCAA regionals.
Under the 6th-year head coach, the Bulldogs have competed in four regionals. They have won the opening game three times in those postseason appearances.
"It's not about your opponent," Cohen said. "It's about playing the game at a high level and trying to beat the game."
MSU opened the 2011 Atlanta Regional with a 3-0 win over in-state foe Southern Mississippi. The Bulldogs beat Central Arkansas 5-3 in last year's Starkville Regional and downed San Diego State 5-2 in Friday's Lafayette Regional opener.
The only loss has come to Samford 5-0 in the 2012 Tallahassee Regional.Â
In the previous two regionals when MSU has won the opening game, it has gone on to a super regional. The Bulldogs were beaten by Florida in the 2011 Gainesville Super Regional, but beat Virginia in the 2013 Charlottesville Super Regional to advance to last year's College World Series, where they finished second.
