The spirit of the state of Mississippi is strong.
Whether it's helping in the relief effort following the April 28 tornadoes, or seeing a fellow state baseball team in need, Mississippi State athletics has stepped up to the plate to provide any assistance it can.
The Bulldogs were ready and willing to help in the construction of tents beside the Palmeiro Center for first responders following the tornado that hit the Tupelo and the Louisville areas.
MSU and Ole Miss was also there for the Jackson State University baseball program when it lost equipment, such as balls and bats, in a bus fire on a trip to Savannah, Ga.
The Bulldogs and Tigers just happen to be participating in the same regional this weekend in Lafayette, La. On Friday, MSU plays San Diego State at 1 p.m., then Jackson State takes on No. 6 national seed Louisiana-Lafayette in the 6 p.m. nightcap.
There might be an opportunity for the Tigers to say thank you to the Bulldogs for their generosity, but in the mind of MSU baseball coach John Cohen, that's just what the people of Mississippi do.
He was glad the leadership of the Bulldogs like athletic director Scott Stricklin and President Dr. Mark Keenum led the campaign to do something for Jackson State.
"Those guys deserve the credit, but Mississippi State was not the only organization or school that helped those guys out," Cohen said. "It was a group effort.
"That's the wonderful thing about this state. It wouldn't matter who that happened to – everybody is going to chip in from this state. That's what Mississippi is all about. Everybody comes together. It doesn't matter if it's a bus situation or something much more dramatic like a tornado. That's why it's an honor to be a part of this state and the brotherhood of intercollegiate athletics."
