SMITH COLUMN: Eagles can be proud of playoff run in Class 2A

May 24, 2014

The Eupora Eagles have nothing to hang their heads about.
It was no doubt that it was tough for the Eagles to accept the second place trophy after Friday's 7-1 loss in the Class 2A State championship series to Taylorsville, but they certainly made a playoff run that will be remembered for many years to come.
Eupora won six out of nine postseason games to reach the state title series. Coach Brad Mitchell, a Starkville native, and his players are to be commended for working to get into that position at the end of the season.
One year ago, there was a college baseball team that made a similar postseason push, only to finish second in the country. It shouldn't take long for people to realize where this is going.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs managed to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament, won the Starkville Regional, knocked off Virginia in the Charlottesville Super Regional to make the College World Series and advanced all of the way to the National Championship series against UCLA.
Even though the Bulldogs lost two games to miss out on the ultimate prize, they caused quite a stir by just reaching the CWS finals.
Mitchell compared what Eupora did to MSU's successful charge through the NCAA Tournament last year and said teams with talent are capable of doing special things in the postseason.
"We got hot at the right time," Mitchell said. "We talked about Mississippi State's run last year. Were they the second best team in the country? I don't know. Some say yeah and some say no, but at this time of the year, that's irrelevant.
"If you get hot and get on a roll, you take it as far as you can take it and I couldn't be prouder of them."
