MABEN – Led by an impressive outing by Derek Jones on the mound, East Webster claimed a 10-0 six inning victory over East Union Thursday in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs.
In his six innings pitched, the junior held the Urchins scoreless while allowing just three hits, striking out four and walking two.
“Derek is always going to battle and that is the reason I went with him,” Wolverines coach Wes Johnson said. “I toiled over what to do, but I said a guy that is going to compete the way he does is what I have to go with.
“We came out, threw strikes and got some good at-bats early to get out early. After that, we kind of relaxed a little bit and were able to pour it on them, but I tell you those guys are better than what they showed. I expect to go up there and have a battle (today).”
