Rotary celebrates year of service above self

April 22, 2014

Traditionally, Starkville Rotary Club meetings end with a ring of the club’s bell and a mass recitation of the club’s motto: “Service Above Self — He profits most who serves best.” But on Monday night, at the club’s annual banquet, Rotary Club President Brent Fountain opted to break with tradition for a special occasion, leading Rotarians in a verse of “Happy Birthday” for the club itself.

“On this date 90 years ago, 18 friends and colleagues saw the need for a Starkville Rotary Club,” Fountain said. “Their vision to seek service above self has paved the way for the prosperity and growth we enjoy today. I’m going to make an executive decision to suspend the bell and motto and instead end with a hearty ‘Happy Birthday’ to our Starkville Rotary Club.”
