Ruth (Ruthlyn) Moody, 85, of Titusville, Florida, died on April 10, 2014, of cancer.
She was born Ruth Evelyn Austin on January 24, 1929, in New Orleans, LA, to the late Oliver V. Austin and the late Ruth Libby Sharbrough Austin.
She grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi where her father was a professor and head of the science department at The University of Southern MS, known at that time as Mississippi Normal College.
She loves to tell stories of her childhood spent roller skating all around the administration building on the college campus. Ruthlyn graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1945 at age 16.
She went on to graduate from MSCW (Mississippi State College for Women) in Columbus with a major in English. From 1949-50 she was a librarian at the New Orleans public library.
The following year, she attended Mississippi Southern (now known as the University of Southern Mississippi) and worked as an assistant in the college library.
She earned a second degree in Library Science. She then worked as the librarian at Hattiesburg High School. She also served several years overseas in Germany in the Air Force Library Service for the US government under civil service.
Upon returning to Hattiesburg, she met her future husband, Lamar Moody.
They were married on April 10,1963. After living in Hattiesburg for the first 2 years of their marriage, and welcoming the arrival of their daughter, Linda, the couple moved to Boca Raton, FL in 1966. 1968, they moved to Starkville, MS where Dr. Moody was the head of the Educational Leadership department at Mississippi State University until his retirement in 1991.
Starkville was â€śhomeâ€ť for more than 32 years. Ruthlyn was a homemaker and was active in many community and church groups.
The Moody home was always open to family, friends, and numerous â€śadoptedâ€ť students from MSU, The Wesley Foundation, & Aldersgate United Methodist church. She enjoyed organizing historical documents and family photographs and began scrapbooking long before it became popular.
She loved watching the birds outside of her kitchen window, particularly, the hummingbirds.
She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, reading, games, and supporting her daughterâ€™s many activities and musical events.
After moving to Titusville in 2002, to be closer to their daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter, she enjoyed many family activities and events, including a 50th wedding anniversary celebration in April of 2013.
Ruthlyn is survived by her husband, Lamar Moody of Titusville, FL ; daughter, Linda Moody Dearborn, son-in-law Lance Dearborn & granddaughter, Lindsey Dearborn, of Mims, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver V Austin and Ruth Libby Sharbrough Austin, & her brother, Oliver Austin Jr.
A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Titusville, FL on Saturday, April 19, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.
