SHS secures a playoff spot with home win

April 4, 2014

Those associated with the Starkville High School athletic program will say that moving up to Class 6A brought a challenge for all sports.
On Friday, the Yellowjackets tennis team rose to the occasion by defeating Northwest Rankin 4-3 to secure second place in Region 3 and punch its ticket for the playoffs.
"This is one of the toughest districts in the state, just to get out of it is impressive," Starkville coach Rob Fyke said. "Northwest Rankin has always had a solid program. It took a dog fight with two 10-point tiebreakers mixed in there, but to get a win is pretty sweet. For Starkville to beat a historically dominant tennis team says something about where we are heading as a program."
Doubles action was very good for the Jackets as all four wins came from that area.
