On the first day Starkville coach Travis Garner met sophomore A.J. Brown, he asked him did he want to be good or did he want to be great.
Brown quickly answered great.
Garner remembers that day well and from the moment the conversation ended, Brown got to work.
“I told him one thing the first day – 'let’s go to work,'” Garner said. “He has done that. I was leaving one day, I heard ball rattling around in the cage and it was him hitting. It was him swinging a bat and working. He wanted to get better.”
Brown’s work is paying off quickly.
Thus far in the season, Brown is batting .458 with 11 hits, a team leading three home runs and 12 RBI which is also tops for Starkville. Brown also leads the team in extra base hits with seven and has been walked more than any other Yellowjacket having reached by base on balls 10 times.
