FRENCH CAMP – Billy McGee gave himself a lead before even taking the mound for the Starkville Academy Volunteers on Monday afternoon.
As the road team for the game against French Camp, Starkville Academy went to bat first and McGee had a RBI single to drive home Colt Crestman with the first run of the game.
It was one of three hits for McGee and he was also the winning pitcher as the Vols defeated the Panthers 9-7 at Charles A. Rich Field.
McGee pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up six hits with six strikeouts.
"Billy gave us a great outing," Starkville Academy head coach Jody Britt said. "We ran into a little too many pitches. They got some key hits there at the end and he may have been getting tired. When you catch every day that you don't pitch, you get tired fast."
Britt turned the game over to Crestman to get the final two outs and even though French Camp made a charge late, the Vols were able to hold on to the victory and got a game-ending out at the plate.
