MABEN – Behind outstanding pitching from Miller Hancock and Carson Gilliland, East Webster picked up an impressive 10-0 shutout of the Riverside Bulldogs on Monday afternoon.
Coupled with a 15-9 win against West Lowndes in the nightcap, it capped a successful two days for the Wolverines in the East Webster Baseball Tournament.
Despite allowing one Bulldog to reach in the top of the first inning of the first game, the Wolverines pulled themselves together defensively to hold Riverside scoreless.
Derek Jones was the first to find a place on base for East Webster after singling to second. Jones proceeded to steal both second and third before stealing home to give the Wolverines a 1-0 advantage.
Two quick outs highlighted the beginning of the bottom of the second for East Webster, then with two down, the Wolverines found new life.
Shelton Tillery started things off reaching on an error then advanced to second off a Riverside balk.
After stealing third, Tillery made his way home off a Braden Harrison double to left. Harrison scored on a steal of home making it 3-0 midway through the inning.
East Webster’s final run of the inning came compliments of a Bulldog mishap as Miller Hancock crossed the plate off a wild pitch.
The Wolverines extended their lead a bit farther in the bottom of the third. Dillan Silver opened the inning with a single to the shortstop. Luke Wilson and Kolby Crowley then joined their teammate on base following a Riverside error and being hit by pitch. Crowley was then replaced by courtesy runner Jones.
Tillery then stepped into the box where he provided a single to left allowing Silver to score while advancing Wilson and Jones one base each.
Both runners didn't have to wait on the bases long. Luke Wilson was next to score thanks to a fly out from Harrison while Jones managed to steal home for the second time on Monday, giving his team a 7-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.
Neither team scored in the fourth inning, but in the bottom of the fifth East Webster returned back to offensive production.
Cade Shurden led off the inning with a triple and was subsequently brought home off a Draper Nason double.
Nason advanced the Wolverines lead one run by stealing home to close the fifth with East Webster on top 9-0.
The final run for the Wolverines came on the very last play of the game. After walking to lead off the bottom of the sixth, Crowley made his way around the bases compliments of a Spencer sacrifice and Bryant single to centerfield.
It was clear the offensive production from East Webster was just too much for Riverside, but batting was not the only area where the Wolverines excelled.
Base running was one of largest strengths for the Wolverines. In total, the team managed to steal 14 bases including four steals of home.
On the mound, Hancock went 3.2 innings giving up just two hits while in relief Gilliland went 2.1 innings with zero hits and zero runs.

West Lowndes 9

MABEN – The Wolverines continued the offensive production right into game two.
Outside of one Panther reaching on an error, the Wolverines kept the bases clear for the most part in the first inning.
