Lineup adjustments can often spell disaster for teams.
East Webster's softball squad is not one of them.
Despite playing without third baseman Mamie Hollenhead, the Lady Wolverines never stopped performing.
East Webster picked up two wins on Monday at its own Fast Pitch Tournament. The Lady Wolverines defeated Ethel 13-1 and Hatley 9-4.
“Anytime you can get the win is good,” East Webster coach Lee Berryhill said. “Of course everybody wants to win, but it is also about how you play. With our third baseman going down, we had to flip flop our defense so we have to go to work in practice and get them familiar with their new roles. In this game, you have to play with instincts. You can’t play and think. Right now we are thinking. We have to get to that point, get them relaxed so they can better execute and do their jobs.”
Outside of dealing with a change in roster, the Lady Wolverines found themselves having to adjust to Hatley’s pitching style which kept East Webster guessing for a few innings.
“We didn’t hit the ball as good as Hatley,” Berryhill said. “Give their pitcher credit. She is what I call effectively wild. She threw enough strikes, and then a few balls, to keep you off stride, but our bottom did a good job turning the inning over. They get on, turn the order, then we got the big hits when we had to.”
