Living in a college town, Starkville residents get many opportunities to experience cultures outside their own.
In a couple weeks, a new heritage will come to the Starkville Sportsplex in the form of the Central Mississippi Scottish Heritage Games on March 29-30.
Hal Bullock, one of the Gray Beards or elder advisors in the Golden Triangle Celts Clan, states this event has particular importance on this area due to the Golden Triangle's original founding by those of Celtic descent.
On top of the historical value, Bullock said the games are slated to provide a new type of sporting event for the community.
"This offers something a little different than SEC sports," Bullock said. "Not that there is anything wrong with that, but this is a completely different type of event. (This) should be something not only fun to watch, but a tradition we hope to create year after year where we bring world class athletes and novices together to have fun in something that is a little unusual for them."
The games might seem a little out of the box, but each one traces its roots right back to the olden days.
Take for instance the Stone of Strength, which involves throwing a heavy ball as far as possible. It's similar to today's shot put. While this game has been modernized, the idea is pretty true to its origins of simply finding a heavy rock and throwing it.
