SHS defeats defending champs

March 9, 2014

WINONA – The Starkville Yellowjackets continue their winning ways on the road Saturday with a 10-7 victory over defending Class 5A State champion Kossuth.
After a 2-1 victory over East Webster in 11 innings Friday night, the Jackets improve their record to 5-1.
Starkville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning before Kossuth scored once in the second and three more in the third to secure a 4-3 advantage.
The Jackets regained the lead with five runs in the fifth frame and did not allow Kossuth to regain the edge. Kossuth got one run in the fifth and two in the seventh, but it was not enough as SHS collected two more tallies in the sixth.
J.D. Taylor had three hits to lead the Jackets at the plate, while Harper Day was the winning pitcher.
Starkville travels to New Hope on Tuesday.
