Lady Eagles pick up pair of victories
MABEN – The softball record for the Eupora Lady Eagles jumped above the .500 mark in less than two hours of work.
With a pair of victories to open the East Webster Classic Tournament on Saturday, Eupora improved its overall mark to 3-2.
The Eagles started the day with a 5-4 victory over Houston and followed that up by beating Vardaman 7-1.
Eupora head coach Kaley Harris liked the way her squad responded.
"I felt like they were on the ball (Saturday) and played a lot better defense," Harris said. "They worked together and cooperated. They looked like a team."
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning against Vardaman with three runs on two hits.
After the Lady Rams scored their only run of the game in the second frame, Eupora answered that with a run in the third on a RBI infield hit by Marlee Ray.
The Lady Eagles stretched the margin to 7-1 with three more runs in the fourth. Jalisa Bell drove in a run with a single and Kaitlin Burton had a RBI with a sacrifice fly.
The lead was enough for Eupora pitcher Delta Newman, who had seven strikeouts in the four-inning stint before the time expired.
"She had to bear down there at the end, but we got through it," Harris said.
Courtney Hatchet had two more singles to go with the three she had in the first game against Houston, while Bell added a pair of singles and Khylar Cain had the only extra base hit with a double.
MABEN – Emily Littlejohn drove in the winning run as the Lady Eagles won the first game of the Classic.
Hatchet had three hits, while Burton added a double and single.
