Religious Restoration Act raises concern - Some fear people will use bill to justify discrimination

March 5, 2014

The Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act is heading to the Mississippi House of Representatives and stirring up controversy along the way.

The act was introduced to the Senate as Senate Bill 2681 in late January. The bill, which sailed through the Mississippi Senate on a 48-0 vote, seeks “to provide that state action or an action by any person based on state action shall not burden a person’s right to the exercise of religion.” The bill also includes a provision to add “In God We Trust” to the bottom of the State Seal of Mississippi.
