A chance to appear in the Class 6A North championship game and advance towards the state tournament was on the line Friday evening when the Starkville Yellowjackets and Grenada Chargers tipped off at the SHS gymnasium.
In the end, the shots did not fall for the Jackets way and it was the Chargers who got the 61-43 victory and meets Madison Central tonight for the North title.
“We are talking about an opportunity to play for a state tournament berth,” Starkville coach Greg Carter said. “When you do some of the things we did (Friday), you don’t deserve to go. Transition points, not being able to finish around the basket, not being able to make open shots – if you are going to go to the state tournament, you have to do those things and we didn’t do them.”
Carter says the team had the opportunities, but it simply did not take advantage of them. All in all the game reminds him of another loss Starkville suffered during the postseason.
