It will be a rematch when the East Webster and Okolona boys basketball teams meet on the court tonight in the Class 2A, Region 4 Tournament.
Just last week the Wolverines and Chieftains tipped off with Okolona walking away with a 66-53 victory.
Having already played the Okolona, which enters the district playoffs as the No. 4 seed, East Webster, the fifth seed, has a pretty good idea what it will take to reverse the outcome tonight in Bruce.
“They just have quick athletic guards,” Wolverines coach Corey Stidham said. “We are going to have to do better stopping the penetration and keeping them off the boards.”
East Webster and the Chieftains are set to tip at 7:30 p.m., in Bruce with the winner advancing to face No. 1 seed Calhoun City on Friday.
In a girls matchup, Katie McDonald, who is in her first year as coach at Eupora, knows tonight’s opening round game of district playoffs brings a new beginning for her Lady Eagles.
“We are still in it,” McDonald said. “We are not out of it and this is our chance to prove to everybody else. It doesn’t matter what your record is going into it. It matters how you play during the tournament. I am proud of my girls and if we play like we did Friday night, I have no doubt we will go far.”
Eupora, who enters as the fourth seed, will need that momentum when it steps onto the court to face fifth-seeded Bruce, which McDonald said improved tremendously from the first time to the second time the teams faced off.
“Bruce is really scrappy,” McDonald said. “They are going to do us man defense and we haven’t been able to handle man all year, but we have some new plays going and I feel pretty confident about the game.”
Adding to the challenge of the game is the fact that Bruce has home court advantage, but McDonald is simply asking her girls to focus on the task at hand and extending their season game by game.
Should the Lady Eagles capture the victory, they will move forward to face Calhoun City.
