When Roy Oswalt was growing up in Choctaw County, there weren't many big league players around.
The three-time Major League Baseball All-Star is doing his best to be a staple in the Weir community and all around Mississippi.
On Saturday, he got another chance to do that.
Oswalt was the guest speaker at Mississippi State's First Pitch Banquet held in the Palmeiro Center.
"They ask me to come do this and I thought it would be a good opportunity to give back some that I've learned along the way and some of the experiences I've had," Oswalt said. "I remember growing up in Weir, you didn't have a lot of big league players floating around town, so as much as I can give back to them and teach them some of the things I've seen and learned along the way. (It's about) just giving them a little more stepping stones to get to the next level."
