WEST POINT – Starkville head coach Greg Carter wasn't happy with the way his squad played in the first half.
He let them know.
"They knew we didn't play very well in the first half," Carter said. "We didn't defend like we normally do and we didn't execute offensively like we normally do. We missed layups and got into foul trouble. The first half isn't how we play."
The Yellowjackets responded and outscored the West Point Green Wave 57-31 in the second half on the way to an 89-55 victory Tuesday night on the road.
The Jackets had five people in double figures. Dontavious Self led the way with 16 points. Richard Evans scored 14, Tyson Carter and Raphael Leonard each had 11 and Zeb Rice accounted for 10 points off the bench.
SHS took a 32-24 lead into the locker room at halftime after leading 15-11 after the first quarter.
"(Coach) said we had to talk on (defense) and get offensive rebounds," Evans said of what Coach Carter told them at halftime. "They were killing us on the boards."
