Alderman unhappy with public comments - Board OKs asst. chief post, equality resolution

January 22, 2014

Ward 7 Alderman Henry Vaughn broke into a lengthy public comments section during Tuesday’s Board of Aldermen meeting at Starkville City Hall to publicly admonish citizens who spoke critically of the board.

Vaughn’s comments came shortly after comments from former alderman Mary Lee Beal that criticized, among other things, the process the board underwent to advertise for its vacant police chief position. Beal claimed the board didn’t search broadly enough for the right candidate, as it only advertised locally for the position, and she said she believed that happened because aldermen had already made up their minds and were “just going through the motions” for formality’s sake.
