MSU women not happy with latest loss

January 18, 2014

Mississippi State junior center Martha Alwal was not her happy, joyful self following Thursday night's 67-63 loss to the Tennessee Lady Volunteers.
In the past, even with some losses, Alwal would be able to keep a smile on her face.
It was different after falling by four points to the 12th-ranked team in the nation.
"I'm really upset," Alwal said. "The game was our's and we shouldn't have lost the game."
The Bulldogs had cut the margin to two points at 29-27 with 17:43 remaining in the game against the Lady Vols and to three points on several other occasions, but just couldn't finish the comeback.
MSU coach Vic Schaefer saw the disappointment in Alwal's eyes. He knew there was more to it than just letting Tennessee escape Humphrey Coliseum with the victory.
Alwal just missed having a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. She had eight points at halftime and only had two touches in the second half.
"She's unhappy right now because we can't get her the ball," Schaefer said. "That's a problem with our guards. (Alwal had) seven touches the first half and only two touches the second half. At the timeout, I'm showing them how to get it inside and they are not throwing it down there.
"I want her mad. I hope she's madder than a wet hen. I hope she comes to practice (Friday) mad too. Turn her down and I hope she's hollering at somebody because I told them at halftime that I want her to have the ball. She's 4 out of 7 at half, (and) she should have gone 8 for 14 for the game. That's something we've got to work on with our guards."
