MEMPHIS, Tenn. â€“ It has been an up and down season for Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott.
He started the season as the backup behind senior Tyler Russell. After an injury to Russell, Prescott was thrust into starting role, and never really turned it back over.
Prescott's mother, Peggy, lost her battle with cancer in November. He fought through all the adversity and ended the roller coaster season with MSUâ€™s 44-7 win over Rice in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
â€śIt has been about Mississippi State University and this football team being there for me,â€ť Prescott said. â€śI canâ€™t be more thankful to coach (Dan) Mullen, my teammates, the university, President Keenum (Dr. Mark Keenum) and everybody else for just sticking with me.â€ť
The Haughton, La., native completed 17-of-28 passes for 283 yards and tied the Liberty Bowl record with three passing scores. He rushed for 78 yards and two more scores to give him a Liberty Bowl record five total touchdowns. For his efforts, he was selected as the Most Valuable Player, as voted on by the media.
