Felker enjoys bowl experiences with Bulldogs as player, on staff

December 29, 2013

It may have been called the Sun Bowl, but it could have very easily been called the Fog Bowl in 1974.
In only the fourth-ever bowl appearance for Mississippi State, quarterback Rockey Felker led the Bulldogs to El Paso, Texas, against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Both teams had to deal with a rising fog that developed across the field in the first half.
Felker, who is now the director of player personnel and high school relations at MSU, said no one seemed to mind the conditions because they were just enjoying the bowl experience.
The Bulldogs had not made a postseason bowl game since the 1963 Liberty Bowl.
"The fog and the steam is something people will remember the most about it," Felker said. "I think everybody, the fans and coaches, had a good time with that bowl. We hadn't been to a bowl in so long. It had been over 10 years.
"I don't know of any Mississippi State fan who didn't go to El Paso that week. There were a lot of State fans there. If you are old enough to remember it, you talk about it."
