The Starkville Lady Yellowjackets saved their best defense for overtime.
Starkville shut out the H.W. Byers Lady Bears in the extra frame to win a 51-47 decision at the Travis Outlaw Slam Dunk at the Hump Christmas Tournament.
After Byers rallied from a 47-40 deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game and send it into overtime, the Lady Jackets had the only four points in overtime.
"It was about playing and not giving up," SHS senior Imane Montgomery said. "We came back and ended up winning."
Montgomery scored the first basket of the game to put Starkville in front and had eight of the 14 points for the Lady Jackets in the first quarter as they held a 14-10 lead.
Byers out-scored SHS 15-9 in the second quarter to take a 25-23 lead at halftime.
