The Starkville Yellowjackets knew the challenge was going to be difficult against the much-bigger Brandon Bulldogs in the final game of the Starkville Thanksgiving Classic Saturday night.
Starkville showed it was up for the challenge and claimed a 60-55 victory at home.
â€śIt was a big win for us,â€ť Jackets coach Greg Carter said. â€śThat is a good team, (and) something different for us. We didnâ€™t defend well the first half. (We) didnâ€™t defend or rebound very well. (In) second half, we came out and the third quarter we set the tone defensively a little bit.â€ť
Zeb Rice opened scoring for SHS with a pair of threes putting the team up 6-0. After allowing the Bulldogs to cut the lead to one, Dantavius Self was good for two points to make it 8-5 in favor of the Jackets. Back-to-back baskets from Richard Evans took it to 11-7, then he provided a pair of free throws making it 13-10 with Starkville in the lead.
