Today, Paul Tashiro helps build relationships between Americans and Japanese as president of the Japan-America Society of Mississippi (JASMIS). But when he was 13 growing up in Japan, he volunteered to become a kamikaze pilot in World War II, only for the country to surrender before he could fight.
â€śWe thought that was the greatest virtue, to dedicate our lives to the emperor,â€ť Tashiro said. â€śWe didnâ€™t know about democracy. Education makes people different.â€ť
