MSU instructor earns master teacher honor

November 21, 2013

Mississippi State University mathematics instructor Kim Walters sums up her teaching ethos with a popular fable about a boy, a businessman, and untold numbers of starfish.

It begins when a businessman finds a boy throwing beached starfish into the ocean to ensure their survival, she said, and the businessman tells the boy he has a good heart but could probably find a better use for his time. He asks the boy if he really believes he is making a difference, with so many starfish on so many beaches. The boy simply picks up and throws another starfish into the ocean and says, “I made a difference for that one.”
