Coach Herman Boone remembers Titans

November 20, 2013

hen Herman Boone, the high school football coach played by Denzel Washington in “Remember the Titans,” came to Mississippi State University’s Colvard Student Union Ballroom Wednesday night, dozens of people were gathering outside hoping to get seats.

Using sliding panels, the ballroom can be subdivided into three smaller rooms labeled “M,” “S” and “U,” and the “U” room had been set aside for Boone and his audience. Then, 10 minutes before Boone was scheduled to speak, staff began moving putting the subdividing panels on the left side of the room away, and the many waiting outside began streaming into the “S” room. When seats ran out, many began sitting on the floor. One of them was Bobby Gordon, a redshirt freshman slated to begin playing football at MSU this spring.
