Sturgis mayor called on carpet for ethics issue

October 24, 2013

Sturgis Mayor Walter Turner is slated to appear today in Jackson before the Mississippi Ethics Commission, which has charged him with violating ethics codes by selling goods to the city of Sturgis while in office.

Turner is the owner of Adams Hardware, the sole hardware store in Sturgis. According to an MEC letter signed by Assistant Director Chris Graham asking Turner to appear for the hearing, MEC found probable cause to believe Adams Hardware sold goods to the town of Sturgis during Turner’s tenure as mayor. Mississippi law says no public officer can have a monetary interest in any order made by a governmental board either during his or her term or until at least one year after it expires.
