SMITH COLUMN: Burton sees the Jackets play big games

October 19, 2013

Starkville High School has been in its share of big football games over the past few years.
For the last 34 years, Charlie Burton has watched most of them.
Burton has only missed one season of Yellowjacket football since 1979 and has been the true example of what a fan should be.
The only SHS season Burton missed was in 1987 when he had to have surgery.
He entered Yellowjacket Stadium once again for Friday night's game against the Madison Central Jaguars.
"I like my run in pulling for the Jackets," Burton said. "It's really good to look back and see where you've come from. My wife got into the school system and that means a whole lot."
Burton attended church with a friend Moon Kemp and they started going to Starkville football games together.
Other family members got involved and before they knew it, Burton had plenty of company going to watch the Jackets.
