Walker: More room to cut city budget

Though Starkville’s Board of Aldermen has already opted to include a smaller tax increase in its proposed 2014 than originally planned, some of the aldermen believe the budget could handle an even smaller one.

The board voted Tuesday to reduce its initial plan for a 2.78-mil increase in ad valorem tax on residents’ real and personal property to 1.98 mils, with Ward 5 Alderman Scott Maynard recommending the board capture the revenue difference through cost savings.
