Volleyball tournament helps MSU see where team stands

September 1, 2013

There's no better measuring stick for an athletic team than to open the season with a tournament.
The Mississippi State volleyball squad got a big dose of that over the weekend.
This past weekend the team opened the season by welcoming Southeast Missouri State and the University of Arkansas-Little Rock to town for the Maroon Classic. As action wound down on Saturday evening, the Bulldogs found themselves 2-2 this season after sweeping Friday and dropping both matches on Saturday.
Seeing her team struggle somewhat on day two gives MSU coach Jenny Hazelwood the insight to what her team needs to work on as the season progresses.
“One of the biggest things we will learn coming out of this weekend is just to train at a little bit of a higher level,” Hazelwood said. “We’ve done a lot of really good things through preseason, but it’s about taking care of the little things every day in practice. You’re playing four matches in two days and when they get tired those little things, if you’ve done them right all the time, then you are doing them right even when you’re tired. That will be the biggest lesson coming out of this weekend.”
