Though lights flash, tracks empty

Saturday afternoon brought a storm with it — a sudden torrent that emptied itself in about an hour and left downtown Starkville bathed in humid air and pale, pink twilight.

Several motorists traveling on Jackson Street near Rosey Baby's and the First Baptist Church Outreach Center at that hour found red lights flashing and bells ringing on a railroad crossing traffic signal. Many motorists stopped, forming lines three or four cars long, assuming a train was coming.
