It's good to have an individual defending state champion for any high school athletic team.
Not only do the Starkville Lady Yellowjacket cross country team have Kate Mattox, who has won the last two Class 5A State cross country titles, back, but there's a nice supporting cast around her.
The Lady Jackets return five runners that finished in the top 22 in the state last year. They were Kate Mattox, her older sister Walker, Carla Bohna, Abigail Arinder and Shanika Musser. Kate and Walker Mattox made the All-State team last year.
Starkville will have all of those runners available to open the season at the Tupelo Christian Invitational tonight.
"We can't wait for the season to get started," SHS cross country coach Caroline Woomer said. "We have some talented female runners back for sure. I'm very excited. Our core group is coming back. The girls are going to be strong."
