John Wafer Edwards, Jr., 86, died March 25, 2013 at Starkville Manor Nursing Home in Starkville.Â
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013 in the chapel of Welch Funeral Home.Â Rev. Phil Fancher and Rev. Hank Anderson will conduct the service.Â Burial will be in Memorial Garden Park Cemetery.
Visitation for Mr. Edwards is scheduled for Thursday, March 28, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville.Â
He was a brick mason and member of Starkville Church of God. He was a veteran of World War II, where at the age of 19, during the Pacific Theatre, he fought in the Battle of Okinawa, in which he received the Bronze Star.Â He enjoyed flying planes and playing fast pitch softball.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Wafer Edwards, Sr. and Nora Bell Edwards; his first wife, Eva Joyce Edwards; sisters, Lora Rushing and Eugenia Taylor; and brothers, Otis Bell, Homer Edwards and Joe Edwards.
He is survived by his wife, Earline Livingston Edwards of Sturgis; sons, Philip Edwards (Kristine) of Starkville, Stephen Edwards of Sturgis and Tyson Tingle (Joanie) of Louisville; sisters Kathleen Alford, Patricia McHann and Berline Riley, all of Starkville; eight grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to Starkville Church of God, 100 Locksley Way, Starkville, MS 39759 and Antioch Baptist Church, 4285 Pleasant Hill Rd., Sturgis, MS 39769.
