He was born Dec. 28, 1930 and was reared in Bradley. Tater, as he was fondly called by his family, was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired member of the Jolly Squares square dancers and Baptist by faith. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He spent many years as an accomplished grocer with Giant United and Pic Pac. He also opened what was then the first convenience store in Starkville called Pack n Sack at the corner next to Shep’s Cleaners. He retired from Mississippi State University as a MAFES research analyst. Tater loved Mississippi State and Ole Miss athletics and never missed a chance to watch them play. If ever there was a greater coach than Johnny Vaught, you couldn’t have convinced Tater.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 59 years, Nan Nelle Bright Gillis; and a multitude of nieces and nephews which include Jo Lynne Bright and Michael Bruce of Starkville, and Bubba Wilkerson of West Point.Â
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister and brother.
In lieu of flowers please donate to Palmer Home for Children or the First Baptist Church of   Starkville.
