The Starkville Lady Yellowjackets fastpitch softball team is looking to use the momentum of last year's Class 5A playoff appearance to have another good run this spring.
Even though SHS lost the first two games of the season going into the Tupelo Jamboree over the weekend, head coach Wendy Jolly still likes the direction the program is headed.
The Lady Jackets lost one senior from last season, but Jolly still considers the squad to be young.
"We only have three seniors this year," Jolly said. "We're starting a lot of 10th graders too. I'm really proud of how far along they've come. They've worked really hard over the summer and have come a long way since last year."
Starkville gave up a large number of runs in losses to Kosciusko 14-1 and Choctaw Central 24-12, but Jolly was encouraged by the 12-run output by the offense in the second game of the season.
The Jackets look for continued contributions from Shanele Johnson, Sasha Shurden and others as the season progresses.
After hosting Ackerman on Friday, SHS enters spring break and Jolly hopes improved weather conditions will help keep her team on the field and in a groove.
"We're just getting started and haven't had a whole lot of time on the field because of the weather," Jolly said. "Hopefully the weather will be on our side and we can get on the field, get a little more work in and we should be good to go."View more articles in:
