Minor in Lowndes custody after club shooting, 1 killed

February 15, 2013

Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office deputies confirmed they have a 17-year-old Starkville resident in custody after a Thursday morning shooting at a club near the Oktibbeha-Lowndes county line that resulted in a death.

Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt confirmed 23-year-old Trumaine Q. Macon of Starkville suffered a gunshot wound at Crossroads Lounge on Miss. Highway 182 West and was pronounced dead at 12:58 a.m. Thursday at OCH Regional Medical Center.

Lowndes County Deputies were dispatched to the scene at 12:11 a.m. Oktibbeha County deputies arrived afterward to assist.

Marc Miley, Lowndes County Chief Deputy, said a 17-year-old male Starkville resident was taken in custody but would not release his name. Due to the investigation’s ongoing nature, Miley said he does not know if more arrests will be made.

Miley declined to say whether or not a handgun was recovered.

Hunt said others at the club loaded Macon in a vehicle — which ran out of gas near the East Oktibbeha County Fire Department — to transport him to OCH. The second vehicle he was placed in arrived at OCH, Hunt said, but Macon was pronounced dead after attempts to resuscitate him failed.

Miley said this is not the first shooting he’s worked at Crossroads Lounge during his tenure, but this is the first such incident this year and there was not one last year.

The club was charged by Alcoholic Beverage Control agents with unspecified alcohol violations Wednesday night that were unrelated to the shooting, Miley said.
