SA girls beat Memphis HS

ECRU – Facing some of their stiffest competition of the season, the Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers were able to establish a lead and never give it up in defeating Memphis Homeschool Educational School 82-77 at North Pontotoc on Saturday.

The Lady Volunteers, who improved to 32-0 this season, jumped out to a 21-18 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased the margin to 41-33 by halftime.

Starkville Academy entered the fourth quarter with a 60-48 advantage. The Lady Vols were outscored in the final frame 29-23, but had developed a big enough gap to hold on to the victory.

It was quite the shooting display from both teams as SA hit 27-of-53 shots from the field for 51 percent, while Memphis hit 25-of-49 field goals for the same percentage.

Memphis hit 16 3-point field goals, while the Lady Vols sank nine from long-range territory.

The area where SA had a noticeable edge was in the post and it outscored Memphis 52-28 in the paint.

Maggie Proffitt led the Lady Vols in scoring with 22 points, while Sallie Kate Richardson and Anna Lea Little produced 19 points each and Nora Kathryn Carroll also scored in double digits with 12 points.

Starkville Academy returns home on Tuesday to play Heritage Academy.
